New York Dolls frontman David Johansen has passed away at the age of 75.
According to USA Today, the punk icon, who also released music under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter, was diagnosed with Stage-4 cancer over a decade ago and suffered from a brain tumor since 2020.
His family posted a sentimental message to the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund following his passing that detailed his final moments.
"David Johansen passed away peacefully at home, holding the hands of his wife Mara Hennessey and daughter Leah, in the sunlight surrounded by music and flowers. After a decade of profoundly compromised health, he died of natural causes at the age of 75. David and his family were deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support they’ve experienced recently as the result of having gone public with their challenges. He was thankful that he had a chance to be in touch with so many friends and family before he passed."
Johansen's loved ones concluded by assuring the legend knew he was "ecstatically loved" until the very end.
The "Personality Crisis" hitmaker shared a video to the fund's website just two weeks before his passing, thanking fans for donating to his cause.
Johansen entered the music scene in the 70s and is responsible for New York Dolls' tracks, "Trash," "Lonely Planet Boy," and "Looking For A Kiss," to name only a few, and solo songs, "Girls," and "Frenchette," again to name only a few of the lyrical masterpieces he gifted the world throughout his career. Johansen also released entire albums by his alter ego, Buster Poindexter, including tracks, "Bad Boy," "Hot Hot Hot," and "Are You Lonely For Me Baby" from 1987's Buster Poindexter.
